Lower Mortality

Research shows that regular exercise may help lower your mortality. According to a study conducted by Harvard and other international universities, exercising 2-4 times more than what is advised by the US Department of Health & Human Services may reduce mortality. The study concluded that to achieve the maximum association with lower mortality, you would need to perform:

  • 150 to 300 minutes of vigorous physical activity a week (between 21 and 43 minutes a day) OR
  • 300 to 600 minutes of moderate physical activity a week (between 43 and 86 minutes a day) OR
  • An equivalent combination of both

Results showed that those who engaged in 300 to 600 minutes, or 5 to 10 hours, of moderate physical activity per week experienced a reduction in all-cause mortality of 26% to 31%. That’s just one 45-minute workout class a day!

Structured Exercise Routine

As we pointed out in a previous blog, sometimes it can be difficult to find time for exercise with a busy schedule. Workout classes make it a little bit easier to block off some time, given that they’re scheduled in advance. Not only that, but the instructor comes to class with a planned workout ready to go. Some people thrive through structure, and prefer that they can come to class and follow along rather than determine what exercises to do themselves like in the fitness center. This is especially advantageous for newcomers. The gym can sometimes be intimidating, and workout classes are a great way to get started.
