Fitness for Every Age: How to Stay Active at Any Stage of Life

Young people working out in a fitness center finding fitness for every age

Staying active is one of the best things you can do for your physical and mental health—at any age. But how we move, what our bodies need, and how we recover can vary depending on our stage of life. The good news? Fitness is a lifelong journey, and it’s never too early—or too late—to start.

At Lakeshore Sport & Fitness, we offer programs and amenities that support members through every decade, helping them move with purpose, feel strong, and stay motivated along the way.

Kids & Teens: Building Healthy Habits Early

Physical activity helps kids develop coordination, build confidence, and burn off energy in a positive way. At LSF, we offer youth fitness programs, swim lessons, sports leagues, and even summer and school break camps to help kids explore movement in fun, age-appropriate ways.

Tip: Encourage a variety of activities to build all-around fitness and prevent early burnout from a single sport. They can discover what they’re passionate about early on to maximize their enjoyment out of that activity or sport.

20s & 30s: Setting a Strong Foundation

This is often the time when people get serious about fitness—training for races, building muscle, or simply staying active while balancing work and life. Whether you’re into strength training, cardio, yoga, or group classes, it’s important to find a routine that’s sustainable and enjoyable.

Tip: Focus on consistency, not perfection. LSF’s personal training and small group programs can help keep you on track and motivated.

40s & 50s: Staying Strong & Injury-Free

As metabolism begins to slow and muscle mass naturally decreases, strength training and mobility work become even more important. This is a great time to mix things up with cross-training, lower-impact cardio (like swimming or indoor cycling), and core-focused workouts like Pilates.

Tip: Prioritize recovery and flexibility. Our spa services and yoga classes can help reduce soreness and stress.

60s & Beyond: Moving for Mobility & Longevity

Staying active in your 60s, 70s, and beyond is one of the best ways to maintain independence and overall well-being. Balance, joint health, and functional strength are key focus areas. Many of our older members love our gentle fitness classes, walking track, and indoor aquatic workouts for their low-impact benefits.

Tip: It’s never too late to start. Even small amounts of movement can have major health benefits—both physically and mentally.
