Safety precautions!
We’re excited to welcome you back to the club! While we have been closed, we have been researching all that we can do to keep you safe: we have consulted with doctors, hospital maintenance companies, and commercial cleaning experts to create great solutions to ensure a safe and healthy space for our members and team members. While we have a great plan in place based on CDC and local guidelines, please understand this will need to evolve and adapt over time as we progress through each phase of reopening — we welcome your feedback throughout this process so we can continue to make improvements.

Lakeshore Sport & Fitness is committed to creating a safe and healthy space for members and team members at the club. One strategy for ensuring the clubs are sanitized thoroughly and regularly is our investment in the OMNI PURO Sentry UV light disinfection system that irradiates 99% of pathogens in a space and is the preferred method of cleaning in hospitals.

This is in addition to use of the Clorox360 electrostatic disinfection system and their cutting edge sanitization products that carry NSF approvals, ATP testing used in USDA facilities to confirm cleanliness, which will be used to audit all of our spaces and equipment throughout the club and CompuClean, a software solution to maintain a cleaning and audit database of our new systems, which we’ll use to score our teams on meeting the highest criteria for infection controls.

Free Parking!
Through the end of July, we are providing free 2-hour parking at the Park Millenniumgarage for all members. Standard member pricing still applies for the 3 hour and 8-hour passes.

Massage is Back!

Losing Weight After Quarantine

Posted on: June 24th, 2020 by lakeshoresf

Many of us have adopted a less active lifestyle when we were stuck at home. We move less and eat more due to boredom or stress. A recent study has shown that the average American has gained about 5 pounds over the course of the quarantine period, and 49% of respondents are afraid they won’t get their pre-quarantine body back. Here are some tips on how to achieve quarantine weight loss and feel fit again!

In order to lose weight,  you’ll need to create a caloric deficit, which means the amount you burn must exceed the amount you take in. That can be achieved through physical activity and/or eating healthier. Try a combination of the following for the most effective results.

Cardiovascular Exercise

Any form of cardiovascular exercise – such as jogging, swimming, or biking – is great for burning calories. The great thing about cardio exercise is that it comes in many varieties – so choose the one you will be most likely to adhere to. A lot of people associate cardio exercise with really intense workouts that result in dripping sweat and being out of breath. While intensity is up to you, even 150 – 300 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise is sufficient, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The greater caloric deficit you create, the faster you will lose weight. The intensity of your workout will affect how quickly you burn calories. You will burn more calories from running the same amount of time as walking, for instance. Factors such as age, weight, body composition, gender, and overall daily activity will also determine how many calories you burn. Aim for a 3,500 calorie deficit per week, or roughly 500 calories per day.

Lift Weights

Lifting weights isn’t just for building and toning muscles. Not only do you burn calories during your workout, you’ll also burn more over time because muscle mass increases your resting metabolic rate. A pound of muscle burns 10-20 calories per day while a pound of fat only burns 5 calories per day. It is recommended that you lift 60-80% of your 1 rep max to stimulate muscle growth, and therefore increase your metabolic rate.

Strength training also has other benefits besides weight loss:

  • Strengthens bones and connective tissue
  • Improves balance and stability
  • Reduces high blood pressure
  • Builds confidence and self-esteem

Eat Healthier

Spending all that time at home made it all too easy to wander to the pantry and pick out a snack to compensate for boredom or stress. Now is the time to make a conscious effort to make healthier food choices.

Try to stick to three meals per day that are well-balanced, filling, and are regularly spaced out over the day. If you are really hungry and would like a snack between meals, stick with healthy options such as fruits and vegetables. Scouring the grocery store for a healthier version of your favorite cookie, cracker, or dessert is futile. Fruits and veggies are low in calories, nutrient-dense, and fiber-rich to help fill you up. This is also a simple way to lower the amount of calories on your plate. The more fruits and veggies you have on your plate, the less room you have for other items that may contain more calories.

Another way to ensure healthy choices throughout the day is to plan your meals out ahead of time. This may not be as convenient, but convenience usually forfeits some nutrition (i.e. fast food). Advanced meal planning sets your intention of making healthy choices. It is easier to eat healthy when you prepare food yourself and have great choices readily available.

Limit Your Screen Time

Technology is great for many reasons, including fitness. However, too much screen time can get in the way of what’s really important. Binge watching TV shows and movies can prevent us from being physically active and it’s all too easy to get glued to your phone.

Computers and phones are often necessary for work or school. Schedule time to take a break away from screens for a short period every day. It will give your mind a rest and allow you to be more mindful of the present. You can also fill the void with physical activity like walking or going to the gym.

If you and your phone are inseparable, put it to good use. There are plenty of fitness apps that encourage exercise, track your progress, or use GPS to map out a run or bike ride. Wearables are also useful for tracking your steps and heart rate. Turning exercise into a game is a fun way to hold yourself accountable and can boost your motivation.

Want to turn exercise into a game? Have a friendly competition with your family members on how many steps you take each week. Set goals for each person, and reward the winner for being the most active. Download our FREE Step Tracking Chart below!

What are Your Post-Quarantine Fitness Goals?

Posted on: June 16th, 2020 by lakeshoresf

Unfortunately, the current pandemic situation has either altered or halted the New Year’s resolution goals we set at the start of the year. However, as Chicago fitness clubs slowly reopen and return to a new normal, we can use this as an opportunity to set new, post-quarantine fitness goals.

A New Starting Point

Over 80% of people have had given up on their New Year’s fitness goals by March, right before the pandemic affected fitness centers. While some were still continuing their fitness routine at that time, the motivation to work on resolutions tends to disappear as the year goes on. After several months of the clubs being closed, we weren’t able to exercise in our typical fashion and some of us might have stopped altogether when quarantined at home. Thus, you may have felt like all your progress and momentum evaporated. And that’s ok. Now is your time to start again.

This pandemic may have changed what we were used to, but it also grants a new opportunity to assess our old fitness goals and to alter or create new ones. Don’t know where to start? Ask yourself, “What do I miss and how do I take advantage of life more after this is all over?”

Goals give us purpose. They give us an end result to work towards and drive us to work harder. Let’s view this as a new opportunity to start over. Now that the clubs are in the process of reopening again, we can create post-quarantine fitness goals or “post-quarantine resolutions” and treat this time as if it were the New Year all over again.

Being quarantined at home, you may have developed some bad habits such as unnecessary snacking and lack of physical activity. We need to get back to taking care of ourselves by exercising more and eating healthy. Let’s first develop a plan to tackle our new post-quarantine fitness goals.

Plan Your Post-Quarantine Fitness Goals

Now that we’re starting over, we’ll need a plan to accomplish our health and fitness goals. Just as we did with our New Year’s resolutions, we’ll need to create measurable parameters so we can track our progress. You could even just take your previous New Year’s plan and alter the timeline using this month as your starting point.

A good plan should follow the SMART methodology (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Timely). Your post-quarantine fitness goals that follow the SMART methodology might look like this: “I want to lose the quarantine 15 over three months.” This goal may seem basic but it checks all the boxes of the SMART methodology. It has a specific numeric weight loss target that’s easily measurable, relevant to the current situation, achievable in a healthy manner, and has a set timeline.

Take Action & Track Your Progress

You can’t make any progress if you don’t get out and take action! While we have limitations during Phase 3, we are still offering outdoor group classes and non-instructional supervised workouts so you can exercise the way you want. If you’re not quite ready to come back to the club, we’ll be here for you when you’re ready to return. In any case, we advise you to start out slow and ease your way back to a new routine. Before long, you’ll feel like your old self again.

Tracking your progress is important to see how far you’ve come and to see how far you have left to reach your post-quarantine fitness goals. If you need help with incremental tracking, we’ve created a weekly habit tracker and worksheet to make it easier. You can find the download link at the bottom of this blog.

Overcoming Setbacks

Account for setbacks in your plan, because they almost always happen. The true test of character is how you overcome them. We are navigating through challenging and unprecedented times where the “normal” we were used to might not return for quite some time. Success will come from finding motivation, mindfulness, taking action, and problem-solving whenever you encounter new challenges. Determine an alternative course of action if something doesn’t work out the way you thought. A well-thought-out plan will ensure you’ll see results in no time!

Struggling on your own? We’re here to help. Click the button below to download the Weekly Habit Tracker & Worksheet so you can accomplish your new Post-Quarantine Fitness Goals!

10 Exercises You’ve Been Doing Wrong at Home

Posted on: June 2nd, 2020 by lakeshoresf

With fitness centers temporarily closed in the Chicago area, many are resorting to at-home workouts, either on their own or through virtual classes. Bodyweight exercises are convenient as they don’t require any gym equipment. However, if you’re not accustomed to doing bodyweight exercises, you might be prone to mistakes (especially if you can’t check your exercise form). We’ve highlighted 10 exercises you might be doing wrong and ways you can fix them.

10 Exercise Form Mistakes

1. Plank

The most common mistakes people make when planking are sagging their hips too low or raising them too high. Sagging hips cause your back to collapse. If your hips are too high, the exercise isn’t working your core like it should. So tighten your core and maintain alignment in you shoulders, hips, and heels.

2. Sit-Ups

When performing sit-ups, most people put their hands behind their head. Because of this, they have a tendency to pull on their neck. The objective of sit-ups is to strengthen your core, so the focus should be on your abdominals, obliques, and lower back. You want to tighten your abdominal muscles to pull you upward. You can also cross your arms on your chest to prevent pulling on your neck.

Another mistake is lifting your chin up too high. Look straight ahead and let your core do the work. Lastly, keep your feet flat on the floor.

3. Glute Bridge

The glute bridge is a great way to strengthen your glutes, hamstrings, and lower back, resulting in better posture – especially helpful if you sit a lot during the day. To perform a glute bridge, lie down with bent knees and keep your feet flat on the floor with arms at your sides. Slowly lift your hips off the floor so your knees, hips, and shoulders are aligned. Squeeze your glutes and draw in your abs.

Avoid flaring your chest or lifting your hips too high, thus arching your back. Don’t push off your toes. Instead, drive through your heel and keep your feet flat on the floor.

4. Squats

Squats are one of the best exercises for strengthening your legs. They work your glutes, hamstrings, quads, and calves, and even your core as well.

One of the more common mistakes with squats is that people start by bending their knees. What you should do instead is push your hips back and keep a neutral spine (don’t allow it to arch). Think of sitting back onto a chair. As you push your butt back, shift your weight to your heels to maintain balance.

As far as feet positioning goes, they should be about shoulder-width apart and pointing forwards. Avoid letting your knees cave inward as you move down into the squat position. They should be in line with your toes as you move down into your squat.

5. Push-Ups

Push-ups are an excellent way to strengthen the upper body using nothing but bodyweight. You might still be surprised how many people have poor exercise form when doing push-ups.

A common mistake with push-ups has to do with elbow positioning, where they flare outward to form a T-shape. Actually, your elbows should form a 45-degree angle from your body. To help correct this, position your hands about shoulder-width apart or just slightly wider. Positioning your hands too wide will cause your elbows to flare outward.

Another thing you want to keep in mind is to keep your whole body aligned – from shoulder to heel (like a plank). Your whole body should move up and down together. Sometimes as people get more fatigued, their upper body comes up higher and this causes the back to collapse.

Lastly, make sure you finish each rep completely. What we mean is that your chest should touch the ground and you use your full range of motion. You should pace the amount of reps you do in each set if you get fatigued.

6. Triceps Dips

Triceps dips are perfect for at-home workouts because they can be done on any sturdy furniture like a bench, chair, or couch. The objective is to isolate your triceps and shoulders so you want to avoid flaring your elbows outwards. Keep them in line with your shoulders and squeeze your shoulder blades together. Don’t crunch your chest as this will cause your back to arch too much and force your shoulders too far forward. Leave your chest open and your shoulders down and back.

7. Forward Lunges

The forward lunge is a simple way to strengthen the leg muscles responsible for forward movement. When you step forward into your lunge, your front knee should form a 90-degree angle. What you want to avoid is allowing your knee to go too far forward. It should line up right over your toes. Another mistake is allowing the upper body to lean too far forward. Keep that upper body vertical throughout the entire exercise. Hold your chest up and look straight ahead.

8. Side Lunges

Just like with the forward lunge, your bent knee should be in line with your toes. Avoid overextending as this will put unwanted strain on the knee. Foot positioning is also important. The toes of your bent leg shouldn’t point outward. They should always point forward and stay parallel with your plant foot. Keep both feet flat on the floor. Sometimes the plant foot has a tendency to lift off the floor and your ankle can buckle, thus risking injury.

9. Donkey Kicks

Want to warm up your glutes and hip flexors? Start with donkey kicks! We want to isolate the glutes with this exercise so the lower back should be flat and hips should be in a neutral position. With knees still bent, kick back one leg at a time, keeping your hips stable. Don’t kick too far, as this will cause your back to overarch. As you extend your leg back, keep your foot parallel to the planted leg and avoid turning it inward or outward.

10. Mountain Climbers

One of the most common mistakes with mountain climbers has to do with the starting position. The starting position is the same as a push-up with your arms extended, which means that some people tend to stick their butt too high in the air. Keep your whole body aligned in a straight line from shoulders to heels.

After you’re set up properly, you would bend one knee and drive it towards your chest, and then switch legs. It’s a relatively quick movement so people have a tendency to “bounce” up and down. To prevent bouncing, don’t allow your toes to touch the ground as you drive your knee to your chest. Also, keep your hips stable and don’t sway to either side.

Safety First

Safety is always a top priority – hence the importance of proper exercise form. We want the movement to be effective at working our muscles, but we also want to avoid any risk of injuring ourselves. A few additional tips we’d like to include are to never hold your breath and maintain control of your movements. Sometimes that means slowing things down and always be mindful of what your body is doing.

Keeping Healthy in Cold and Flu Season
With our medical advisors, we have been working on the best way to handle the Covid19 and strong influenza season. While there is a lot of talk about Covid19, it is important to put things in perspective and not panic.  Covid19 does have a higher mortality rate than the traditional flu but is still much lower than other viruses like SARS, and Covid19 seems to have more mortality consequences for those with respiratory challenges.  We will see many cases of Covid19 in our community, just like we have seen many cases of the flu.

The single best way to protect yourself is regularly washing your hands with soap for 20 seconds or longer, followed closely by avoiding touching your eyes, nose, ears or mouth. At LSF, we are working hard to ensure the club is as clean as possible: we are deploying extra personnel to disinfect areas such as doorknobs, railings and weights. In addition, we have acquired new cleaning chemicals and equipment to help clean more challenging areas such as children’s toys.

To help maintain as clean an environment as possible, we need your help: please use the wipes we have in all studios and work-out areas to clean anything that you touch.  Please use the hand sanitizer regularly.  Please cover your mouth with your elbow if you need to cough or sneeze.  If you are not feeling well, please refrain from coming to the club.  If you have other thoughts or suggestions on how we can best help keep everyone healthy, please contact us at [email protected].

Imaging – A Closer Look

When we talk about injuries, we often hear of primary care physicians and orthopedic specialists performing imaging in order to assist patients in treating musculoskeletal pain. Imaging can include, but is not limited to, MRIs, X-rays, or CT scans. Although these tests may help feed our curiosity to “look under the hood,” they may not always be the best place to start.

It is important to remember that our bodies are more than a static picture. Positive imaging findings do not always mean pain and pain does not always mean there is structural damage. This topic has been heavily researched and we summarize some of those findings in our most recent blog post this month. To learn more on this topic, go check out our blog at www.lakeshore-pt.com!

 Mind Body Exercise Through Pilates!
Whether you are new to exercise, an elite athlete or somewhere in between, the foundations of Pilates movement apply to you. Building from core strength, focusing on proper alignment, and a body/mind integrative approach make Pilates accessible to all. With thousands of possible exercises and modifications, Pilates workouts can be tailored to individual needs. The core muscles of the body are the deep muscles of the back, abdomen, and pelvic floor. These are the muscles we rely on to support a strong, supple back, good posture, and efficient movement patterns. When the core is strong, the frame of the body is supported. This means the neck and shoulders can relax, and the rest of the muscles and joints are freed to do their jobs, not more. Contact [email protected] for more info.

Featured Instructor – Ed Dailey

Ed Dailey has been a cycle and tread instructor with LSF for the past 7 years and loves bringing the training that he does outside the club to our members. He began racing triathlon in 1996 and is now a world ranked 16-time ironman, ultra-distance runner and mountain biker. He has now set his sights towards becoming a dietitian. “I always ask my classes to focus on their goals, paint a picture of what that looks like, hang it in front of them and now let’s go get it today.”

Take Time to Recover – Stretch and Spa

It’s been 6 weeks since the new year and you have been working hard!  Make sure you take the time to work on recovery.  LSF offers 30-minute guided stretch sessions with a stretch specialist. They will take you through a full body stretch and foam roll.  We also offer massages which are also a great way to keep your body feeling good while you are training.  Email [email protected] for more information or book your recovery session.

Featured Instructor – Tyra Notorangelo

She first discovered her love of yoga in 2001 and was inspired to pursue teacher training in 2009.  “I try to make my classes inclusive to all levels by providing safe options for those who may be newer, while still challenging for those who have practiced for many years,” she says. “I always include a reading and some yoga philosophy so the students can focus on the mind, along with the asana (poses).  As a student, I enjoy many styles of yoga and take from different teachers and participate in workshops so I can continue to learn and grow as a teacher.  I believe that yoga is a journey and that is why it is called a practice, there is no destination.” Come explore yoga with Tyra on Monday mornings at 10am and make this practice a part of your weekly routine!

Mindfulness Workshop: Meditation and Breathing – Saturday, February 29th

at 2-3:30pm in Yoga 1

Inspired by Asana (postures), Pranayama (Breathwork) and Dharana (Concentration), we will explore how the 8 Limbed Path leads us beyond the physical and into more subtle layers of being. We will start with light movement to prepare the body for sitting comfortably. You will then be introduced to a few breathing techniques, including the method and purpose of Ujjayi – the most commonly mentioned breath practice suggested in yoga classes today. We will also discuss meditation from the yogic perspective and practice a few variations together. No experience necessary, and all levels welcome.

Try StepFusion With Nicole Thomas – New Choreography on Wednesday February 19th at 8:30am!

If you have been curious but a little intimidated about trying the popular but notoriously complex and rapid-fire cardio class, StepFusion, start at the very beginning this Wednesday, February 19th. Nicole teaches the same choreography over the course of several weeks, so you have the chance to learn and master the movement patterns, add flair, and look and feel like a pro! She breaks down the combos again each week into bite size pieces and cues each move, so you can always feel free to join in the fun, but the first week is a great place to start – especially for the very beginner. STEP up to this challenge – and stick with it – and you’ll find a fantastically fun cardio workout and a great group of friends to sweat with in the Main Studio! We hope to see you at StepFusion on Wednesday mornings!

Work out with a friend to stay committed!
If you’ve arranged to meet a friend for a walk or booked an exercise class, you’re more likely to keep that commitment. Not wanting to let your friend or exercise partner down can be a great motivator to show up and as your exercise becomes routine, perhaps after a few weeks, you’ll both find it less challenging and more likely stick to your commitment. On those days when you don’t feel like exercising, a pep talk from your workout buddy might be just the lift you need. You can support each other.  That’s why Lakeshore Shore gives you $10 off your monthly dues for every friend you refer, but this Month we are giving an EXTRA $100 credit for any friends you refer.  Reach out to [email protected] for guest passes for friends.

Lose 2 Win Bonus Workout and Weigh In!
Lose 2 Win is officially underway at both clubs.  All Lose 2 Win participants at our Illinois Center location are invited to a special BONUS CLASS on Saturday, February 22nd at 12pm in our Main Studio at Illinois Center.  After the class, those that would like will have the opportunity to weigh in to check their progress.  If you have any questions or concerns, please email [email protected].

Special Event: Sound Healing Candlelight Yoga – Friday, Feb 28th, 6-7:15pm

Bring a loved one and join Jack Ryan for a special practice featuring restorative live music. This candlelight yoga class will be slow and peaceful. We will take time to let go of the stress of the daily grind as we connect to the breath, body and mind. Experience a lovingly sequenced journey of intention-based movement complimented by a generous surrender series and Savasana accompanied by the tranquil sound of live, meditative crystal bowl music.

Enchanting and peaceful, crystal singing bowls produce resonate pure tone notes that start soft and grow quite loud. The sound they produce affects the physical body, subtle body, and mind. The sounds of the bowls often feel like they are buzzing or even rushing through you, calming you, and quieting your mind. Truly this is a sui generis experience that cannot be grasped without experiencing it.

Featured Instructor – Jess Tulbure

Jess is a passionate yoga teacher who has turned her hobby of practicing yoga into a lifestyle. She is aware of how yoga simplifies and impacts her life off the mat in a positive way. She teaches yoga to offer the opportunity for her students to find their own bliss. She loves to create new sequences and playlists regularly to keep things fresh!
