Dynamic vs Static Stretching

While most athletes agree that an effective warm-up is key to great performance during a game or workout, they may not know whether static or dynamic stretching is better before athletic participation. This has been a long-debated topic, but research demonstrates that a dynamic warm-up is actually most effective. Here’s why: dynamic stretching allows your body to be continuously moving, increasing blood flow and slightly increasing core body temperature. The increase in body temperature prepares you for more intense physical activity. Static stretching, conversely, can actually decrease core body temperature by several degrees, which does not promote enough blood flow for an effective warm up. Static or prolonged stretching also elongates your muscles, tendons, and ligaments, making them less effective at contracting rapidly, reducing power. Dynamic warm-ups prepare the body in a more sport-specific manner by increasing coordination, motor function, and by activating the nervous system, giving you a greater mental focus on the activity ahead. A dynamic warm-up should last 10-15 minutes and cause slight perspiration. It should include exercises that address all major muscle groups fairly equally and varies depending on your age, fitness level and the goals of the activity. Some dynamic warm-up routines include high knees, and buttock kicks for the lower body or arm circles or shoulder elevation for the upper body. Incorporate a dynamic warm-up, reduce the likelihood of injury and perform at your best!

Club Information

Guest Policy

It’s January and the club tends to be busiest at this time of the year with all of us embracing new goals and healthy resolutions. That said, we want your friends to have a great experience with you as your guest. To maximize your guest’s experience at Lakeshore, we offer these friendly reminders:

  • Every membership type is given 5 complimentary guest passes to use as you chose, whether for out of town guests or local friends. These passes are automatically entered on your member account. To use them, inform the Front Desk attendant that you would like to use one of your complimentary guest passes on file.
  • Once your 5 passes are used, or if you chose not to use a complimentary pass for a friend, the member “buddy” rate is $17.50 per day which is 50% off the normal guest rate of $35.
  • If you have a friend who may be interested in membership, have them meet with a membership advisor who can help get them set up with a short term membership trial.
  • Guests are welcome to visit the club 5 times per 365 day rolling window whether paid or through complimentary visits. Thereafter, the guest must become a member to use the club.
  • If someone cancels off of your account (adults or children), they are prohibited to be a complimentary guest of the club for 6 months. Instead they must pay the $17.50 “buddy” fee.

In order to best serve our members, PARKING IS RESERVED FOR MEMBERS 8AM-12:30PM DAILY, which means that guests are not allowed to park in our lots unless the guest has an appointment to meet with a membership advisor.

Don’t Get Towed!

Please remember – our towing company goes through the parking lot and will tow anyone without a valid parking sticker posted in your car. We have been proactively trying to alert members that they are parked illegally but the towing company won’t be as nice! Make sure you have the parking sticker properly displayed so our towing company does not tow you! If you need to register your car, please fill out the appropriate form at the Front Desk to get the sticker and then display it in your car.

Air Quality Improvement Project

We are excited to let you know that we have upgraded the filtration system throughout the club to include brand new, hospital grade air filters to ensure cleaner air with fewer particles in it. We also have established a frequent replacement protocol for these filters to continue maintaining great air quality. We hope that you enjoy the cleaner air!

New Power Lifting Studio

The Business Office, located immediately behind the Front Desk, is moving. It will be replaced with a new Power Lifting Studio. This project will take a few months to complete, but is getting underway now. In the meantime, the Business Office will be transitioning locations but an associate will be available either in the Business Office or behind the Front Desk moving forward.

Conference Room Available

We are pleased to let you know that we have a conference room, equipped with A/V and PolyCom conference phone, which can be rented by members. The Conference Room can accommodate 8 people comfortably. Please contact LPEvents@LakeshoreSF.com for more information, pricing or to book your reservation.

What is Your Core?

We always hear about “core strength” however what does this really mean? People often have the perception that your core is only made up of the abdominal muscles. It is actually the sturdy link in a chain connecting your upper and lower body. By working on pure rectus abdominis strength (sit ups, for example) you are not really working on core strength and could potentially even injure your spine. The core is composed of the gluteal, lumbar, abdominal, pelvic floor and scapular muscles. These muscles all work together to stabilize your body during movement. The muscles of your core often do not consciously work together, and therefore it is important to learn how to appropriately activate your core musculature. Bridging is a common core stabilization exercise that can be modified from very basic to advanced. It is necessary to have good core stability for exercising, daily activities, on-the-job tasks, and all athletic participation. If your core is not stabilizing properly it may lead to issues such as low back, hip and knee pain.

If you have any questions about your core stability, please contact us at Lakeshore Physical Therapy or visit our website to learn more about our services at www.lakeshore-pt.com.
